NAIROBI, KENYA / RankWire.AI / – A new worldwide assessment reveals that coordinated efforts to combat climate change and air pollution can generate approximately $15 in economic advantages for every $1 invested. The assessment was published on September 7 by the UN Environment Programme and Climate and Clean Air Coalition. It evaluates 25 strategies targeting major sources of emissions and pollutants. This report is described as the first extensive global economic analysis of integrated climate and clean air actions.

The analysis forecasts annual economic gains equivalent to 2.8% of global GDP by 2035. This figure is projected to increase to 4.5% in 2050 and reach 11.4% by 2100 if all measures are fully implemented. Even excluding non-market welfare gains, the measures are estimated to produce a return of about $4 for every $1 spent. The report further estimates that delaying implementation by a year could result in the loss of more than $1.5 trillion in combined annual benefits.
The 25 identified measures span areas such as energy, fossil fuel systems, industry, transport, agriculture, residential energy, and waste management. These include promoting renewable energy, increasing energy efficiency, advancing cleaner cooking and heating methods, deploying electric vehicles, and enforcing stricter vehicle emissions standards. Additional strategies target oil and gas leaks, routine venting and flaring, fertilizer application, livestock, rice cultivation, and crop residue burning. The package also emphasizes improving waste management and reducing emissions of hydrofluorocarbons and other climate pollutants.
Major economic sectors stand to benefit
Air pollution remains a key factor in the economic analysis due to its impact on health and productivity. The assessment links human-caused outdoor air pollution to approximately 6.4 million premature deaths globally in 2025. Household air pollution was responsible for an additional estimated 2 million premature deaths, including around 300,000 children. Outdoor pollution also contributed to 5.5 million new childhood asthma cases and 2 million new dementia cases within that year.
Implementing all measures fully could prevent a total of 144 million premature deaths related to air pollution by 2050. Of these, 96 million would be associated with ambient air pollution. The assessment also projects hundreds of millions fewer cases of chronic illness. Compared to baseline scenarios, immediate action could cut global carbon dioxide emissions by half by 2050, reduce methane emissions by 60%, and lower several key air pollutants by about 70%.
Climate and health benefits are interconnected
The modeled package would limit global warming to about 0.34 degrees Celsius by 2050 and approximately 1.4 degrees by 2100. By the end of the century, emissions of major air pollutants could decrease by as much as 85% under this scenario. The costs of implementation are estimated at roughly 0.7% of global GDP over the next decade, decreasing to about 0.5% by 2100. The assessment also suggests that stronger enabling conditions could accelerate full implementation by as much as ten years.
UN Environment Programme and Climate and Clean Air Coalition announced the results in observance of the International Day of Clean Air for blue skies. The report highlights institutional barriers as significant obstacles to broader adoption of existing measures. It estimates that resolving these enabling conditions could save up to $10 trillion by 2040. The findings integrate climate policy, air quality, health expenses, and productivity into a single economic framework covering measures already accessible across major sectors.
